How to take care of your flower arrangement
Caring for your fresh flowers is essential to ensuring they remain vibrant and beautiful for as long as possible.
Once you’ve received your stunning bouquet or flower arrangement, follow these simple yet effective steps to maximise their lifespan and enjoy their beauty to the fullest.
Unpack with Care
The first thing you should do is gently remove all packaging materials from your flowers. This includes any plastic sleeves, rubber bands, or wire ties.
Unpacking your flowers carefully will prevent any damage to the delicate blooms and ensure they can begin to breathe.
Re-cut the Stems
After unpacking, take a sharp pair of scissors or garden shears and re-cut the stems at an angle by 1-2 cm (about half an inch to an inch).
This angle allows for better water absorption, helping your flowers stay hydrated. It’s a small step that can make a significant difference!
Fresh Water is Key
Next, fill a clean vase with fresh, cool water. Ensure that the water is at a suitable level for your flowers—typically, around 2-4 inches deep is ideal.
Be sure to use a clean vase to prevent bacteria from entering the water, which can shorten the lifespan of your blooms.
Keep Foliage Above Water
As you arrange your flowers, make sure that all leaves and foliage are above the water level.
Any submerged leaves can lead to bacterial growth, causing the water to become slimy and potentially harming your flowers.
Keeping foliage out of the water helps maintain a clean environment for your blooms.
Optimal Placement
Position your vase in a location that avoids direct sunlight and drafts.
Flowers thrive in cool environments, so keeping them away from heaters, air conditioners, or hot appliances will help them stay fresh longer. A spot with indirect light is usually best.
Regular Water Changes
To keep your flowers looking their best, change the water every two days.
When changing the water, take a moment to re-cut the stems again, as this allows for better water uptake and keeps the blooms fresh.
Maintenance as They Age
As your flowers begin to show signs of aging, it’s important to continue your care routine. Regularly check for any browning petals or leaves, and gently remove these to keep the arrangement looking tidy. You can also continue to re-cut the stems and change the water as needed.
By following these simple care instructions, you can enjoy the beauty of your fresh flowers for days or even weeks longer.
Remember, a little bit of attention goes a long way in preserving the charm of your floral arrangements!
